Gauteng Province, 1995

The Provincial Government Logo of Gauteng, the smallest of South Africa’s nine provinces, containing the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, was granted on 17 July 1995. It has a blue shield; its colour is that of the gown worn by the speaker in the Provisional Legislature. On the crest is a gold-coloured pickaxe symbolising the gold mine beginnings of the province and links to its name: “Gauteng” derives from the word for gold in the languages of the Tswana and Sotho peoples. A coronet, like that on the head of the provincial mace, is on top, and the shield is supported by two gold lions, symbolising both the province’s name and the lion’s share of the nation’s economy. The province’s motto is “UNITY IN DIVERSITY”.
